Quoted from what is y2k (also by me):

"Y2K" refers to the "Year 2000 (2 k)". Since this is posted in computer history, I'll assume you're referring to it's effect on computers, or more specifically the "Y2K bug". This was a bug out of the fact that before 2000, computers assumed that years started with 19 e.g. 1985 or 1999. When 2000 came around, people just assumed that computers would glitch out with errors as "2000" doesn't fit into the 19__ form. This was attributed to anything that was relied on computers (car ignition systems, coffee makers, etc.). January 1st came and went, and this proved to be false. And life went on...

This caused no major problems, and most programmers had switched their code to be "y2k" compatible anyway.

Oh, and I didn't stop it, other people did

What is the difference between the Y2K bug and the Y2K virus?

According to the experts at F-Secure, the "Y2K Virus" is just a misnomer given to the Y2K bug by media personnel who didn't completely understand the problem.

How do you tell if hardware is Y2K compliant?

If it gives the correct year, it's Y2K compliant. If it thinks the year is "19-something" (for example, if it thinks 2012 is 1912), it's not Y2K compliant and you have a really old computer for some reason.

What is a computer glitch that only showed the year by the last two digits?

What was the world's most serious global problem in 1999 that is not even a factor today?

The Year 2000 problem (also known as the Y2K problem, the Millennium bug, the Y2K bug, or simply Y2K) was a problem for both digital (computer-related) and non-digital documentation and data storage situations that resulted from the practice of truncating a four-digit year to two digits. This made year 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. The former assumption that a twentieth-century date was always understood caused various errors concerning, in particular, the display of dates and the automated ordering of dated records or real-time events.

Was y2k real?

theoretically, yes. people thought that the world was going to end in 1999. Y2K means year 2000 in computer. y (year) 2k (2000)

How long does Y2K remain in your system?

Y2K is a coding glitch, not a computer virus. It stays in your system until someone corrects it. And if it's in your system in the first place, you must be using a ridiculously old computer, like one from the 1980s.

How can you take short notes?

1. short note on "Y2K problem ? Ans:The Year 2000 problem (also known as the Y2K problem, the millennium bug, the Y2K bug, or simply Y2K) was a notable problem for both digital (computer-related) and non-digital documentation and data storage situations which resulted from the practice of abbreviating a four-digit year to two digits. In computer program design, the practice of representing the year with two digits becomes problematic with logical error(s) arising upon "rollover" from x99 to x000. This has caused some date-related processing to operate incorrectly for dates and times on and after http://www.answers.com/topic/january-1, http://www.answers.com/topic/2000 and on other critical dates which were billed "http://www.answers.com/topic/event-horizon-1". Without corrective action, it was suggested that long-working systems would break down when the "...97, 98, 99, 00..." ascending numbering assumption suddenly became invalid. Companies and organizations worldwide checked, fixed, and upgraded their computer systems. While no globally significant computer failures occurred when the clocks rolled over into 2000, preparation for the Y2K bug had a significant effect on the computer industry. Countries that spent very little on tackling the Y2K bug (including http://www.answers.com/topic/italy and http://www.answers.com/topic/south-korea) experienced as few problems as those that spent much more (such as the http://www.answers.com/topic/united-kingdom and the http://www.answers.com/topic/united-states), causing some to question whether the absence of computer failures was the result of the preparation undertaken or whether the significance of the problem had been overstated.http://www.answers.com/y2k%20problem#cite_note-0Many banks have responded to the Y2K problem by forcing full 4-digit year entries on cheque forms, which helps to prevent the error from occurring in accounting environments.

What did the Y2K Millennium bug effect?

The millennium bug was a computer problem that threatened the operations of corporations, utility companies, finance industries, government agencies and even science. On the stroke of midnight between 31 December 1999 and 1 January 2000, the fear was that all computers had the potential of shutting down. The millennium bug is also known as the Year 2000 problem, Y2K problem, Y2K bug, and most commonly referred to as simply Y2K.
