The incumbent, James Polk, declined to run, so the presidency was up for grabs. Taylor was famous as the general who won the Mexican War, so the Whigs ran him. Slavery was the main issue. Taylor was slave-owner from Louisiana, so he did well in the South. He had no record politically and so had no baggage. He did not make any statements during the campaign. His opponent, Lewis Cass came out in favor of letting the people in the new territories decided if they wanted slavery. This position was too weak for the abolitionist movement so they ran ex-President Martin Van Buren who pulled enough votes to tip New York to Taylor.
