The party Romeo attends is a masquerade, so everyone is wearing masks, so it is hard to tell who he is. And once someone does eventually recognize him (Tybalt) his father tells him that Romeo is just a young boy, and not a trouble maker, and that he should just let him be and not cause a scene.
Tybalt was the only one to have seen Romeo and the others, and he is the only one who will recognize him. Later in the story, a man at the party will stop Tybalt from revealing Romeo for fear of it disrupting the party.
They hid their identity's because if they didn't the Capulet's would have flipped and attacked them( the Capulet's and the Montague's hate each other and romeo and his friends are Montague's).

They were going to a masquerade ball, and would have worn masks and other costumes. Tibault (sp?) does catch them, and tells his uncle, who basically says that they did the same things when they were young, and was unconcerned. ( not the best answer, but an attempt.)
