Actors don't always get free products but, when they do, the company which owns the product would (more than likely) have a business plan in mind. One commercial technique that some businesses use is called endorsement. The company would give the actor some free merchandise (or a large sum of money) to wear/talk about that product. Some companies believe that having a celebrity as a representative to express to quality of the product (in a positive way) would boost sales significantly. All the actor has to do is get publicity while wearing the "free" clothes or using their new, "free" technological device and people around the world will be able to recognize it. This is just another system that's used to allows consumerism to flow through the media portal, out of our pockets and into our closets. Now this may not always be the case, but it is surely an effective way to advertise.
