How do you prevent global warming caused by air conditioners?

Condenser heat does not contribute to global warming at a larger extent. The amount of heat thrown to the ambient includes heat removed from the closed area + the amount of motor heat.

The heat energy within the room is removed & thrown to atmosphere. The additional heat thrown to atmosphere is of electrical motor heat which is not a major factor.

A:Any electrical appliance contributes to global warming according to the amount of power it uses. Most of our electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). These all release long held carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. So the more powerful the air conditioner is, and the more it is running, the more it contributes to global warming.

Well the only way to prevent green house gases caused by using your air conditioner is to not use the air conditioner. A/C pulls a lot of power. If that power comes from burning fossil fuels, then A/C can contribulte to global warming.

Many of the Refrigerants used in older Air Conditioners can damage the ozone layer (and they can be toxic too). Old machines should be de-gassed by a tradesman to extract the gasses before they leak into the atmosphere. When servicing machines, the gas should be changed to a safer refrigerant such as 410 which is ozone friendly.

Air Conditioners do not create greenhouse gasses. they do however consume energy, most of which is produced by burning fossil fuels.

Air conditioners use electricity. Electricity, in turn, must be generated, usually by burning fossil fuels. Of course, this does not mean that we should immediately cease using our air conditioners, but we could use them more sparingly and at higher temperature settings, if we wish to reduce our contribution to global warming.

During the cold winter months, reverse-cycle air conditioners are actually better for the environment than traditional electric heaters, because they require less electricity for the same warming effect. But again, use a slightly cooler setting and wear a jumper.
