A female dog in heat will release a strong scent that attracts males that could be over many miles away.

The female is only receptive for about a few days to a week out of roughly 18 days of heat. If the male tries to mate at any time other then the reception, the female may well snap at him. Otherwise, dog's aren't at all picky as to who mates with them, as long as the female is receptive, she'll take any male who approaches her while in heat, and yes, the litter might well have multiple fathers!

After the heat is over, the father usually has no interest in the female, and more then likely wont partake in raising the pups.
