Hi there. A missed BC pill can cause you to be more at risk of pregnancy and it can make your period a day late. It is perfectly fine to miss one pill if you take the next one on time!

Hormonal Birth Control works by suppressing your menstrual cycle so that you no longer ovulate, it also effects cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and prevents secondary uterus lining build-up so even if fertilisation does occur the fertilised egg can't implant itself in the uterus.

As you no longer ovulate it means that you no longer menstruate, the bleeding that women experience during use of birth control pills is a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in synthetic hormones when going from active to inactive pills. A withdrawal bleed is regular due to the order in which the pills are taken, and can be lighter than menstruation due to the pills preventing secondary uterine lining build-up. However you lose the benefits of your menstrual cycle.

For some women, missing one pill can be enough to cause breakthrough bleeding. But too many missed pills does make a baby. Start taking your pill the same time every day and that way you won't forget.

Skipping even one mini pill can cause break through bleeding or even ovulation for some women, if you are on a mini pill and having a lot of break though bleeding or a regular monthly period you may be ovulating and should ask your doctor if it is the best pill for you.

A missed period while on birth control could be a side effect of the type of birth control you are on or you could be pregnant. You should take a home pregnancy test and/or see your Dr.
