Hurricanes weaken when they are not over warm water or are over cooler water. (You couldn't have a hurricane in an area that is not near warm water). When they come to land the energy from the wind is lessened by the land formations as both land and cold water cut off a hurricane from the warm water the provides its energy.

Hurricanes get stronger when they are over warm ocean water and surrounded by moist air to fuel the storm.

Hurricanes also strengthen the most where there is little wind shear to disrupt them.

When the hurricane moves over ground, it loses the humidity it gets over the ocean. Eventually, when it gets far enough inland, there is not enough humidity to keep it going and it deteriorates.
