As blood-sucking parasites, their primary defense is a dogged tenacity, attaching themselves to their victims. They can, however, be removed by sliding a thin object between the leech's head and the wound, then covering the wound until it stops bleeding. Conversely, you can wait a few minutes and it will drop off when it has finished feeding.
