A water molecule falls on a chlorophyl molecule in a leaf. The Oxygen lies holding its two hydrogen atoms apart. A photon of light hits the electron holding one of the hydrogen atoms to the oxygen atom and it lets go. The chlorophyl molecule passes that hydrogen atom to another molecule. Then another photon of light hits the electron holding the other hydrogen atom to the oxygen atom and it lets go and the chlorophyl molecule passes that hydrogen atom to yet another molecule. At that point the chlorophyl molecule lets go of the oxygen atom. It meets up with an oxygen atom from another chlorophyl molecule. The two get together and leave the leaf.

Using the chemical process called photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide and break it down into carbon for use in making chemicals the plants use, and oxygen which they release as a waste product.

Green plants perform photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which they make their food, glucose. It is performed by reacting Carbon Dioxide, which the plant gets from the air, and water, which the plant gets from the soil (through its roots) using energy captured from sunlight. The energy is captured by the green pigment called chlorophyll, found in the plant's leaves. This gives the plant its green color. As a by-product of the reaction, oxygen is produced. the easiest way to explain it is to relate it to humans. we inhale air (02) through chemical reactions in our body which make us exhale (C02) which is exactly what in general all plants whether green or not, need. they will inhale C02 (Carbon dioxide) and through their chemical reactions exhale (02). their appearance is green through this reaction just like blood in the blood stream is actually clear but exposed to air turns red.

They take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, remove the carbon and store it in their leaves, twigs, stems and roots, and release the oxygen back into the air.
