I have used several methods. This depends greatly on the location of the 'den'. 1. Collapse/block entrance. (Do this at night while the animal is out and about. DO NOT entomb the animal.) 2. Dump a bottle of ground cayenne pepper in and around entrance. (DO NOT let your pets sniff the pepper!!!!!!) Rat posion works.use twice as much
It's best not to get rid of it at all. If you get rid of it, other animals would replace it anyway. Opossums are quite good to have in your garden because they eat pests such as snails and slugs, and eat rotten berries.
Possums are very agile climbers. They can climb trees and leap from branch to branch, or branch to roof-top, in order to reach their destination. They also commonly climb along powerlines to reach roofs and backyards.
There are people trained in possum control who can legally and humanely remove possums from your yard or your house. Possums, which are quite unrelated to the opossum of North America, are protected native animals in Australia, and should not be hunted or killed. In New Zealand, where the possum has become a major pest, they may be removed, but it is best to call an expert who can ensure the possum, which is a highly territorial animal, does not return.
Opossums should really be left alone (if they are not a threat to your pets.) Opossums are beneficial by eating the harmful, unwanted pests around your home such as snails, slugs, Spiders, cockroaches, rats, mice and snakes. Think of the Opossum as your free Gardener! LOL The Opossum is known as "Nature's Little Sanitation Engineer." DO NOT TRAP! Opossums are normally transient animals staying only 2- 3 days in an area before moving on. Removal is neither necessary nor desirable. If Opossums were eliminated from an area the population of roof rats and other pests would proliferate. WANTING TO GET RID OF THEM FOR FEAR THEY INJURE MY PETS: DO NOT leave pet food out at night. Don't leave garage doors, pet doors, or unscreened windows open at night. DO pick up fruit that has fall from trees. Do cover garbage cans at night. Do clear dense bushes, woodpiles and other hiding places. IF YOU ARE DETERMINED TO TRAP OPOSSUMS BECAUSE OF RISK TO YOUR PETS: Contact a humane trapper. Make sure the Opossum will be trapped safety in a humane trap and released in another area unharmed. Please do not trap during SPRING OR FALL baby season or animals may become orphaned and die. Marcy Try sticking a rag soaked in ammonia where they enter your yard. This works for most animals.
