In simple terms it is an imitation. Something that looks like but is not the same as the real thing. An engagement ring with a glass stone in it is a fake if it is supposed to be a diamond.

For e.g., a real or natural stone will have some form of inclusions, so if the stone you are being sold looks too flawless, it may not be real. However, if the stone is inexpensive, then its fine if it is synthetic but if it is very expensive then you need to make sure that it in fact real and genuine.
