The most commonly accepted theory is the Big Bang, which occurred many billions of years ago, and the bodies of matter spent some time flying around and colliding with one another, until they calmed down (at least, they have in our solar system) and in another billion years or so, Earth got an atmosphere. A few billion years after that, it got cable TV.
