Excellent question! There are many, many ways to conduct earth research. Thermometers and their constant and predicted use can tell you the climate of an area. Using the ricter scale many times after earth quakes in different places around the world can tell you where the worst earth quakes happen. Observation of the wilderness in an area of the world can tell you many things about the wildlife there. digging in the ground on a predicted fossile site could possibly tell you about the species of life that lived before you did, and what happened then, and so on.
