Vertebrate animals have something called an immune system. It consists of several types of white blood cells. They work in tandem to detect pathogens, then engulf them or attack them with antibodies to destroy them.
Animals protect themselves in a variety of different ways. Some animal characteristics that help protect animals are claws, sharp teeth, hard or spiny shells, and good eyesight.
Usually, they don't. They haven't got the brains to understand the risk. Wild animals tend to have very strong immune systems, which protects them against most illnesses.
