Whether it is polite to ask questions depends on the type of questions and the context. Sometimes it is more polite to ask questions than to assume. Asking personal questions can often be taken as rude by the other person. Asking people about their bodily features, asking what is wrong with this or that body part, asking why they are fat, questioning the right for them to make certain choices, etc., are among questions others would consider rude.
