Reading, more than anything else, will help you become good with words.

Read good writing, both fiction and nonfiction. Read to understand, and read to enjoy. Look up words you don't know.

Take your time and read slowly, noticing the rhythm of the words, the choice of language, the way sentences are constructed, and the effect the words have on you.

Also read knowledgeable comments about the things you read. For instance, read "The Metamorphosis" by Kafka, and then think about it yourself, and then read what others have to say about it.

Take a literature class in school, or at a local community college. Take two. Try to get as much as you can out of it even though the exercises will be more designed to make sure you're not cheating than to help you understand the readings. Use every resource the class offers you to help you absorb the most from your reading.

Read and keep reading, think about what you read, and then practice: write. You will get better.
