To become a criminal lawyer in Canada, you start by applying to one or more law schools. In order to be accepted, you will require excellent undergraduate grades and a high LSAT score. You will also need to convince the admissions committee why you should be accepted instead of all the other applicants who also have excellent grades and a high LSAT score.

If you are accepted, you will spend three years studying at law school. Only a few of your courses will involve criminal law. After law school, some jurisdictions require a period of something similar to apprenticeship. After that, you will have to pass the bar exams. Finally, you will go through the formal process of being "called to the bar."

Then you will be able to practise criminal law.
