The basic concept is, you use your cue to pot one red ball followed by a colored ball, followed by a red, followed by a color and so on. The colors are replaced on their spots if they are potted. Once all the reds are potted you have to pot the colors in the order, yellow, green, brown, blue, pink then black. Play continues until all balls are cleared or you or your opponent concede the frame.

A red is worth 1, yellow 2, green 3, brown 4, blue 5, pink 6 and black 7.

If you try to hit a ball and miss the penalty is 4 points, unless it was a blue, pink or black, in which case the penalty is 5,6 and 7 respectively, given to your opponent. If you hit a ball which you were not meant to it is the same as a miss.

A lot of practice is needed, then you need to start playing local events and then try and get ranked in the top 16 which means you get into all the big events. Ranked outside the top 16 will mean you have to qualify, which can be tricky.

If you are not in the top 64 professional rankings, the only way to get on the main pro tour is through world snooker's Q-SCHOOL. In this there are three tournaments that can be entered by any player, professional or amateur, outside the top 64 pros. The players who reach the semi finals of each tournament are awarded a place on the professional snooker tour for the next two seasons. There is a related link to the official Q-SCHOOL website.

Assuming you want something more definitive than "Practice, practice, practice." Professional players are ranked by various organizations, such as the BCA, or by the various tour sponsors, and are usually based on the amount of prize money won over the course of a season or year, and the number of points awarded. Points are accumulated by playing in and placing well in sanctioned tournaments. Accumulate enough points during a season and that sponsoring organization will rank you as a semi-pro player. The first step above an amateur. Accumulate more points to become ranked a pro.

Simply by scoring more points than your opponent does to win a frame, and then winning more frames than your opponent in a match and reaching the set amount of frames designated to win your match.
