Unless you are homeschooled, your school should calculate your GPA and provide a copy of your high school transcript to all colleges you apply to. A GPA, or Grade Point Average, is found by assigning a point value to each letter grade (A = 4.0, A- = 3.67, etc.), adding all of them up together, then dividing it by the number of classes taken.

Find a tool on the internet like the one we've added in the related link section. No sense re-inventing the wheel by calculating it by hand.

Each grade is assigned quality points. You divide that number by the total number of credits enrolled for. As a very simple example. Let's say you took four courses with each course being 3 credits each, you received an A in two courses and a B in two courses. The quality points for an A is 12. The quality points for a B is 9. Thus, this equals 42 quality points. Now you divide that number (42) by 12 (the number of credits you registered for), which brings your GPA to 3.5 ( a letter grade of B+). The school should have this procedure outlined in their catalog. You have to know the number of quality point for each letter grade as assigned by the school.

What is the average GPA for admission to university of Maryland college park?

When I went to an orientation seminar I heard the average GPA was a 3.5. I had a 3.39 unweighted and I got admitted into the university. Admission is not based solely on GPA. Extra-Curricular activities are an integral part of your admission. There are some rare cases where people get in with low GPA's. One of my friends got in with a 3.0, yet at the same time one of my friends with a 3.5 did not get in. It's not as easy as statistics. Just do your best.

Would a college rescind my admission for making a bad grade in a class I don't even need to graduate?

This will depend upon what your admission to college was dependent upon - this would have been stated in your acceptance letter. If your GPA dropped low enough to not meet admission standards, yes a single bad grade in a non-required class could result in your admission to college being rescinded.
