You have to pull the diff. cover and let it drain. Then replace the gasket. Put the diff cover back on then fill with gear oil. 75w-90 is recommended but 75w-140 could be used if you are towing a lot. Fill to about 5/8" below the fill plug on the top front of the diff.
No you don't have to unbolt the cover. First check to see if you have a drain plug. It will be on the bottom of the differential housing. If you do it will save you money on a gasket.
The differential fluid on a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 needs to be changed every 50,000 miles for normal highway driving. If the vehicle is used in 4x4 regularly, then change the differential fluid about every 25,000 to 30,000 miles.
If there is not a drain plug on the bottom of the differential then you will have to remove the cover. Be sure that you service it with the proper fluid and positraction additive if it is a positraction differential.
You must remove the big medal plate that is bolted to the back of the rear end housing to change the fluid.

I have a 1978 Sierra 1500 and mine is near the secondary tank, passenger side of the truck.
how do you change ash tray light bulb in a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500
You have to remove the rear cover on the differential housing. Once the fluid is all drained, replace cover with new gasket (or use silicone sealer) and refill through 3/8" square plug on the side of the unit. One other point to this. Replacing the fluid can be a bit tricky. By the time you get yourself, your tools, and your bottle of fluid under the truck it can be a challenge to the fluid in the differential. To ease the problem, get a small section of hose to connect to the spout of the bottle and then run the other end into the differential and squeeze. It is pretty easy and faster.
A person an change the starter on a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 by disconnecting the battery and removing the retaining bolts on the starter. The original starter is then disconnected from the wiring and a new starter reconnected.
