The 4-wire cable should have black, red, white and a green or bare wire. The 220 volts is between red and black. The white is neutral or common and there would be 110 volts between white and red and between white and black. The green or bare wire is the ground.
This type of connection can be very dangerous. A proper double pole double throw switch must be utilised in this type of installation. This switch must be installed after the first over current device which is the main breaker in your distribution panel. Most houses today use a combination panel that consists of the main disconnect built into the breaker section. As you can visualize this would become a major installation and revamping of your distribution service equipment. An electrician should do this work as a permit will have to be taken out because the utility company has to disconnect the power by pulling the electrical meter. Back feeding a house when there is a power outage can re energize the primary voltage lines that utility workmen might be working on. There are cases of linemen being killed by generator back feeding.

A four wire alternator in electrical terminology is one that is connected in a three phase wye configuration. The terminal output terminals will be marked L1, L2, L3 and N as the star point. If you are referring to a three phase load as the three wire connection then the load will be connected across L1, L2 and L3.
The recommended method is to use a four wire (Y) to three wire (delta) transformer (sometimes called a "star-delta transformer").
It is unclear what you want to do. It is very likely it cannot be done.

Change the cord/plug on the stove to a four wire cord/plug. When installing the new plug remove the grounding strip that connects the center lug in the stove wiring block to the frame of the stove. Connect the white wire from the new plug to the center lug. Connect the green wire from the plug to the stove frame.
