A standard definition television will never be a high definition television. Standard definition televisions use either 480 (NTSC) or 576 (PAL) lines to form a complete image. High definition uses 720 or 1080 lines to create the image. Unless the television has been designed to display high definition, it will not display a high definition signal. However, converters are available that will process a high definition signal and convert it to 480 or 576 lines. The output of one of these down converters can then be shown on a standard definition television. Be aware that once the signal is converted to standard definition, the image quality will be standard definition because the fine detail found in a 1080 line image is lost during the conversion. The use of a down converter only provides the means of watching high definition content and will never offer HD quality. Some LCD televisions do not offer HD television reception but may have a VGA input for use with a computer. Normally, the VGA resolution is higher than standard definition television; a converter that will take an HD signal and process it to a VGA signal may provide better results. Typically, LCD displays capable of supporting computer displays will have 768 lines or perhaps even higher. A conversion to VGA may well provide a higher quality result but the final quality is dependent on the display, the converter and the incoming signal. Some experimentation may be required and it may me less expensive to simply purchase an HD television rather than a good quality converter.

HD capable, or HD ready televisions are, as their description suggests, ready to display HD. The term means that the television will accept and display any HD source that it sees. In most cases, this will be an HD cable box or satellite receiver or a Bluray disc player. There are very few tHD ready televisions that have built in HD receivers but they are available if you look hard enough. Once an HD source is connected, the television will display high definition. All HD ready televisions will feature inputs based on HDMI interfaces, the new standard for digital video signals. "HD ready" doesn't imply anything about the display resolution of the television itself. HD signals are either 720 line or 1080 line. An HD ready television will accept either of these resolutions and display them but the number of lines that the television uses for its own display is often not 1080 or 720. A "scaler" or a "resize engine" is used inside the television to change the number of lines to fit the screen. If, for example, a television has a 768 line display, all incoming signals will be resized to fit the screen. It means that the maximum resolution that the television will display is 768 lines and not the 1080 line that may be delivered to the television. More expensive televisions will have a true 1080 line display which provides the best display quality for 1080 line incoming signals. There has been at least one example of a television available for sale that had a 480 line display, the number of lines used by North American standard definition signals. Nonetheless, the television proudly boasted that it was "HD ready". Indeed, it was, for the simple reason that it would resize a 1080 line HD display to 480 lines. Make no mistake, the quality of the image would be no better than any standard definition broadcast. You might say that the manufacturer was being deceptive even though it was technically correct. This serves as a caution to anyone looking for a low cost HD television- ALWAYS check the actual display resolution and aim for one that is as high as you can get for the money. Ideally, a 1080 line display is the one to go for but 768 line models tend to be less expensive.

When did they make HD television?

HD television has been around since the early 1990s. Both HD televisions and HD material to show on them remained largely in the hands of broadcast and equipment companies for many years. Until 2003 - 2004 it remained largely a proof of concept with very little HD content available. The explosion in HD televisions happened around 2007 or 2008 when HD televisions became much more affordable and broadcasters were delivering reasonable amounts of HD material.

Is the samsung un55c8000 hdtv integrated or is it just hdtv ready?

They no longer make HD 'ready' TV's. HD ready meant that there was no tuner in the TV. With the digital changeover they all have the HD tuner built in. If you have cable or satellite you will still need HD service to get an HD picture.
