Really its just like when you cook a baked potato in the oven. You clean the potato and then you can put alumium foil around the potato and then you put it on the grill and then you let it cook for a while and then you turn it. And to know when it is finished you poke a fork in the baked potato and if its still hard its not done. But if you can poke through it then its done. * Scrub the potato * Poke a few holes in the potato with a fork or a knife * Wrap in tin foil, sealing the potato inside the foil * Cook the potato on a hot spot on the grill or you can place it directly on the outer edges of the coals, turning occasionally * It's done when a knife will slide easily through the center * If you cook the potato on the coals, it will cook a lot faster, so keep a close eye on it

Scrub your potatoes to clean them, and dry them off with a paper towel. With a fork, poke a few holes in the potatoes. This will allow steam to escape during the cooking process. Cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to thoroughly seal around the potato. Lay the potato on the foil, sprinkle a little salt and pepper (and a little garlic powder, if you like, and add about a teaspoon of butter. Wrap the potato until it is completely sealed so when the butter melts, it won't run out.

Lay the potatoes on a hot area of the grill and grill them for about an hour. Depending on their size smaller potatoes may not take as long to cook. I like to turn my potatoes a few times with a tong to allow for even cooking.

Using tongs or oven gloves, gently squeeze the potato. If it feels soft all the way through, it should be done.

Alternatively, I sometimes place the potatoes (wrapped in foil) directly around the edges of the coals. They cook on the coals while you cook other food on the grill.

Timing will vary according to the size of the potato. Poke several vent-holes in the potato, seal by wrapping in tin foil, and grill at least 45 minutes. You can check for doneness by poking a knife into the potato, or by squeezing for softness (be careful, they are hot!)

A great way to grill potatoes and vegetables:

  • Place them on pieces of foil large enough to wrap around them and seal (don't seal yet).
  • Place dots of butter and salt and pepper or other seasonings on top of the vegetables.
  • Fold the foil over the vegetables, completely sealing the foil packet.
  • Place it on the grill for one hour.
  • Check for doneness, and allow to cook longer if needed.
  • For potatoes, poke a few holes in the skins with a fork or knife, lay them on foil, add a few dots of butter, and fold the foil and seal. Potatoes will take longer to cook. I have put the potatoes directly around the edges of the coals or even in the coals. You have a black mess on the foil, but the potatoes are delicious cooked this way, and they cook more quickly.
