You can find replacement switches for ceiling fan at most hardware store and home centers. There are three different switches that are common to most fans. You have the pull chain switch that controls the light, the pull chain switch that controls the three fan speeds and the fan direction switch. To change them you don't need to know too much about electricity other than to turn the power off at the breaker. You remove your old switch and install the new switch reusing the same connections in the same order. <><><> Most replacement pull-chain three speed fan switches come with diagrams. DO NOT CUT the wires on old switch until you are prepared to cut one of the wires, strip it and insert in in the same numbered slot in the new switch. The old and new switch have numbers 1, 2, 3 and L (Line) designations. Match them and you should be good to go. Follow the safety directions above. Also, do this before summer sets in. It gets hot near the ceiling! IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

If you do this work yourself, always turn off the power

at the breaker box/fuse panel BEFORE you attempt to do any work AND

always use an electrician's test meter having metal-tipped probes

(not a simple proximity voltage indicator)

to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

In order to make an electric fan, all you have to do is buy fan blades and a motor that fits them, then connect the motor to a two AA battery holder and insert the batteries. Simple!

Alternatively, if you have an old CD player lying aroung, you can take out the CD motor and casing and then attach blades to the CD and follow the same steps as above, connecting to batteries or another power source.

In order to make the fan more interesting, you could always connect a variable resistor, allowing you to alter the speed of the fan; or you might just want to connect a switch.

You should be able to find a shop manual at your local library with the right info...make copies as they are usually only in the REFERENCE section....good luck:)

This can be done. Two variables that have to be looked at is the RPM has to match and that the HP be large enough to swing the same size fan blade.
