The larger ships you can buy have cannon to battle the island's various pirates and sea creatures. Unless you have a lot of practice aiming and shooting, you should only engage ships much smaller than your own. Getting sunk can reduce your wealth and increase the time it takes to get the larger ships and skilled crew.
