To make the boxes solid you must first of unlocked Mario. When you have, go to the castles main hall (first room) and stand on the mosaic thing in the middle (there should be a light shining on it). Look at the light and press 'Y' or 'X' (can't remember which, I think it's Y). You will be teleported into the sky and gain a flying ability. Fly onto the tower in the middle and jump on the button on the island. All of the boxes should now be solid.
