Depends upon the stain, sometimes using carpet cleaner prior to washing will help with most stains, some stains are stubborn for instance blood should be removed immediately with hydrogen peroxide.

If minor stains then simple soap washing will help. For worse situation use thinner to remove stains, follwed by hand scrub with detergetn.
the vanish oxi-action stuff works a treat. if not, soak them in water with detergent for like 10 mins. if your jeans disintegrate i refuse to hold any responsibility!
