Start small, and build once lit.
As a scout, I learned to build a small pyramid of tinder, then surround that with a pyramid of larger pieces of wood, and then lean thicker pieces up against that. Then light it up.
These days I actually start with a newspaper. Tearing one-inch wide strips, I get enough to rolll up about 3 sheets around those strips to make two or three tubes of paper tinder. The tubes wind up being about two inches in diameter, with the strips loosely arranged inside. Set them aside and build the pyramid as stated above. Insert one tube halfway through the bottom of the pyramid, and light it. As the fire grows, insert #2, then #3. Enjoy!

True pit barbecue as we know it in America today was developed by the slaves in the South as a method to cook the "not so desirable" pieces of meat they were provided. The fourth disc of the sixth season.
You can have an open wood fire pit as long as you have a grate that will cover the pit and ready to cook food near the pit. The pit becomes a grill once you have both the grate and food near the pit. Remember to burn wood, no yard waste as you can get a fine for that. Wood, Grate, and Food = no fine
