Well, that's the short answer. The longer answer is, "content, content, content." Have real, valuable text information that will be engaging, amusing, or useful to real people. Be sure to the content includes keywords relevant to the subject matter, whatever it may be, and avoid stuffing it with what you think are clever keywords that will fool search engines, because they won't. The folks that write the algorithms are onto you, and they manually check their search engine results and rewrite the algorithms to exclude sites with shallow content or misleading keywords.

Organize your content. Proper use of bolding to indicate important terms will help. Avoid headers filled with scripts, since search engines read pages form the top down and give more importance to content "above the fold." Do not use client side scripts such as Ajax that produce pages that are readable by humans but invisible to robots. Avoid Flash based content unless it is purely visual, and always have a text summary associated with it.

Avoid link farms. The search engine programmers know about them, can you imagine that? They'll penalize you for participating in them. If you provide useful, inspiring, or entertaining content you WILL get links back to your site. Do use social networks to let people know about your offerings, but don't spam thematic feeds or forums with announcements of content irrelevant to them.

Write concise, honest articles; be sure to add ALT or TITLE tags to images. Don't try to BS search engines; they may be robots but they are managed by intelligent, cynical people who will make sure you eventually vanish from sight if you try to con them.

If you've got something to sell--be it product or ideology--describe it completely. That will create visibility.

In other words, do the work to create something worthwhile, present it honestly, in specific language, then promote it only in venues that will appreciate it.
