Assuming you're doing this for someone else:
1) pull the plastic slide down so that the cannula will definitely be large enough to fit the patient
2) hold the cannula with both hands so that the prongs are facing away from you and curving down
3) put the prongs into the patient's nostrils
4) pull the tubes over and behind both of the patient's ears at the same time
5) adjust the plastic slide back up so that the cannula isn't tight enough to bother the patient yet the cannula won't slide off.

Place the nasal prongs in both nares, loop the remainder around both ears and tighten under the chin with the slide.
The oxygen nasal canula should be facing in the same direction as the long axis of the nostrils.

For hygiene purposes I suggest you must request a new canula but if you really want to use your old canula you can always wash it with clean water and wipe with it to dry.

Vaseline is a petroleum product and is flammable. It should not be used with oxygen.
If you are currently on oxygen therapy your physician may add it to your cpap machine via a shuttle/shunt that is connected to the tubing. Thus eliminating the need to wear the nasal canula and the mask together.
