The deal is, that someone has to do the work of picking up and even a fulltime person cannot keep up if it gets out of hand. With a family, that can happen quickly. So, sit down and discuss it. Everyone needs to know the effects of daily habits (eg. leaving clothes, dishes, food etc. where they fall) and the necessity of regular general cleaning (eg dishes, counters, mopping, vacuuming, laundry) to keep the home at least sanitary. There is a show, How Clean Is Your House, that is a good lesson as to what can happen over time, which may be a good conversation starter.
Growing up, it took me cleaning the kitchen and living room from top to bottom every Saturday to keep ahead of it. Even so, three days into the week it was trashed by the other members of the household. If you cannot get commitment from others, hire a cleaning lady and pick up ahead of her.
