The roaches found in a house come from the eggs of other roaches hiding in the nooks and crannies. Roaches don't really like to stay out in open, lighted spaces; they hide in the cracks. They come out into living spaces to eat and then go back in their cracks. Understanding that roach behavior is the key to this very successful method of keeping roaches out of a house. What do you do? Seal EVERY crack and opening in the house. This means all the joints at walls, floors, doors, and windows. This means the top and bottom of every piece of floor molding and every other piece of trim. This means every crack inside every cabinet and closet. This means every opening where a pipe or wire or duct passes through. Small cracks are not okay; only no cracks is okay. How do you do this? Go to a hardware store or home center and buy a full-size caulking gun. It's about a foot long and should cost under five dollars. Then buy a dozen or twenty tubes of inexpensive white acrylic caulk to use with that caulking gun. (Do not get silicone caulk.) Run home and get to work! Fill your gun and get the hang of it. Cut off just a little of the caulk-tube tip, and stick a long nail or coat-hanger wire in deep enough to pierce the seal. Insert the tube in the gun, hold it over a sink, and squeeze the handle little by little, forcing the caulk out the tip. Get used to the pressure you need to keep a thin line of caulk coming out at a steady rate. When done practicing, turn the plunger handle 90 degrees to take off the pressure, to stop the caulk from flowing. Wipe up the caulk mess and wash anything left down the drain with lots of warm water.

Now it's time to practice filling cracks. Pick something easy to get to and well lighted for starters. Start at one end of the crack, holding the caulk and gun at maybe a 45-degree angle, and squeeze the handle evenly while the tip is pressed against the crack. The point is to get caulk INTO the crack, not on top of it. Keeping the tip in the crack, move the caulk and gun backwards at a steady rate, filling the crack as you go. With practice, you'll leave a perfectly-neat, finished look. But don't worry about little mess-ups; all it takes is a moistened finger run along the joint to smooth it out and remove any excess. Now stay off the joint for the day it takes it to dry. Well, you've started. Now all you have to do is all the rest of the house! This could take a couple of Saturdays. Just the cabinets could take all day. Get a light; get stuff out of your way; get your head inside the cabinet if you have to; and fill every single crack--all the sides and corners and where every shelf meets the rear wall. Smooth the joints with a wet finger. When you're done, not only will you have a practically roach-proof house, it will also feel so much cleaner. The roaches are gone, and there is almost nowhere for dirt to hide. (If you find a few stragglers hiding in your book bindings or in your nice, warm sound equipment, just remove them as you see them. You might need to take stuff outside and blow or wash them off.) This method works; I've done it many times and taught it to others. It even works in apartments where your neighbors on both sides have bugs. It leaves your home cleaner, and you have no poison residue and no dying bugs. Where do all the roaches go? I don't know, and I don't care.
