Listen to the engine. if it sounds like its working too hard, or if the accelerator pedal is really sensitive, its time to shift. If its bogging down, its time to downshift.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, it is the Shift Indicator. It tells you when your RPM's are such that you should shift gears for optimal fuel mileage.
it has a light that comes on to tell you when to change gears in a manual car, really just for show and the light can be adjusted to come on at whatever rpm you desire as long as the car can rev as high as it is set before the revs stall. in reality you change gears by ear and not even by looking at the taco let alone a light.
press the up to shift up and down to shift down
You have not pressed the Clutch peddle to change the gears!!
Manual transmission is when you use the shift stick to shift to different gears in a car instead of driving without shifting gears, which is auto transmission.
Sure, you can use your left arm to shift or have a passenger shift for you.

I recommend it. If you do not shift gears while riding a dirtbike, the motor can overheat and blow up.
It's a transmission where the gears do not change themselves, but have to be changed with a gear shift and a clutch.
If it has external gears you can't. They have to have the chain moving tp be able to shift. At best you can lift the rear wheel of the floor/ground, spin the crank, and change the gears. Remember to avoid cross chaining.
Your truck may not shift gears because the transmission sensor is damaged or broken. It also may not shift gears because the transmission or linkage is damaged.
You can remove the linkage from the shifter to the transmission and manually shift transmission.
