Slice and saute two large onions in butter. add onions to four soup crocks, Place 1/2 to 1 cup of hot beef stock to the crocks. Toast 4 crouts (cut about 1 inch thick to fit the crocks). Top each crock with a crout and a thick slice of emmental (or similar) cheese. Bake in a medium oven until cheese is melted and lightly browned. Herbs such as savory, thyme, celery or parsley can be added to the beef stock for flavor and strained out before adding to the crock.

Slice two onions thinly, then saute them for about 35 minutes in butter and oil until they are deep and dark brown Add some beef bouillon and and a little water and stir and reduce until water is gone - let cool then chop. Mix 2 cups sour cream and 1 cup Mayo with celery salt and Worcestershire to taste then mix in onions. Add salt and pepper and say goodbye to the package mix forever!
You simply mix sour cream and onions and you some how mix them together.---its quite obvious if you really think about it.
don't you just buy a mix in the chip isle and you add sour creme? i don't know the start from scratch onion dip, but that's how we make it : )
You know when french onion dip has gone bad because it has water on the top.

If you are thinking about a 'dip' based on 'sour cream', then there is "French Onion Dip" where you add a packet of dried (instant) Onion Soup to sour cream, mix it well and then use as a dip for chips, (crisps) and vegetable sticks. It is verygood.
Here's some of my favorite sites for recipes: cambleskitchen.com, allrecipes.com. You can make things with a pre-made french onion soup or you can make it from scratch. I've found french onion soup to be especially good in burgers or as a dip for vegetables- it's a great party dip.
make your own
I made a big thing of chili cheese dip (it has cream cheese, chili, refried beans, salsa and cheese in it) and we can't possibly eat it all. Can I freeze it for later? I know there are certain foods you shouldn't freeze because they don't do well after you've frozen them. Would this be okay to freeze??
The grocery store on Kinsey and Charleston has it... I bought some about two weeks ago there :)
use plain yougurt...delicious and lower in calories
