There are several ways that one can make a smiling face using a keyboard. The most common way is to use a colon and parentheses. It could also be done using a colon and a capital D.

Type the colon and then immediately the left or right bracket like this::):(Then press the Return key. They will put the happy or sad face in. Also, go to the Insert menu, then Symbol and pick options from Wingdings which has lots of emoticons.
