This was never a correct pronunciation. Even thirty years ago the ending never sounded like "tel" but was much less articulated, more like Kwawk-u- and then the last syllable something as is done with the last syllableof the word kettle. But this has long ago been dropped in favor of Kwag-you-lth. If you went to the very much alive and well village of the modern Kwakiutl and said something like Kwak-u-tell, you'd give them all a good laugh, at least.
