You have to get the fuel rod first by sending the Merlin Owl through the bars to pick it up, then he will bring it to you. When you click on the "strange thing", or UFO, a window will pop up. Drag the fuel rod from the bottom and put it on the area where there is a drained looking thing. Then you can launch the ship.
