The general form of a pedigree is to have the parents joined by a horizontal line with their children underneath them (connected with a vertical line to the parents).
Each generation is numbered using roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, ...) and then individuals in each generation are numbered across (1, 2, 3, etc.)
Females are represented by circles, males by squares. If you see a diamond, this means the sex is not specified.
If you are looking at a specific trait, such as a genetic disorder, affected individuals will be coloured in, unaffected individuals will not be coloured in, and sometimes carriers will have a dot in the middle (of the circle).
A symbol which has been crossed out indicates that the individual has died. If the parents are joined by two lines (instead of one) this shows that they are related. Twins are shown using diagonal lines which originate from the same point on the horizontal line joining the parents.
