Buy a can of refrigerant and a separate feeder hose. This will help recharge in future years--instead of paying a garage $90 a year or more to recharge or $300 or so to find and fix a slow leak in the system... You can pay $25 for the can of refrigerant and hose and about $10 a year for the can. On the passenger side of the engine there is a quick-connect coupling for the coolant. This is the low pressure side of the system, and it is where the can of coolant goes into the system (through the hose, which also has a quick-coupler). In the front of the engine, near the radiator, there is another coupling, but this is to the high-pressure end of the system. The hose coupling will most likely not fit this, but if it does, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADD COOLANT TO THIS SIDE OF THE SYSTEM.
On my 94 (should all be the same or close) there is a black canister between the firewall and the condensor (in front of the radiator) it has what looks like a dust cap covering a connection. Unscrew the plastic cap and go to the auto parts store and buy a couple cans of 134a coolant (preferably with a gauge) start the car, turn the AC on max and the fan to max. Connect the hose on your can of 134a to the connection where the dust cap was, ( it will only fit one way, pull back the outside ring and snap it on if it doesn't fit you're in the wrong place) shake the can and dispense the 134a into the canister release the button to measure it periodiacly to be sure not to overfill and burst the O rings. It may take a couple of cans....have fun
The low pressure refrigerant port is near the firewall, just after the receiver/dryer. You'll need a gauge and preferrably an ac test manifold. You can use the manifold to add refrigerant up to the point where the system maintains the pressure level in the green area.
You can recharge your 1998 Mercury air conditioner by connecting your Freon bottle to the low pressure port. You can find the low pressure port on top of the air conditioner compressor. Release the Freon into the compressor.
Freon is added through the low pressure port of the ac system. You will need the proper type of hose and gauge ( to keep the correct pressure) for your system as well as the correct type of Freon.
The air conditioning compressor is located to the side of the engine. It has two ports on it. The lower port is the point by which the refrigerant is applied.
Connect a gauge to the low side ac port. Connect Freon to the gauge. With the ac running, open the valve and allow Freon to fill the system.
Using a gauge and the proper type of Freon, connect to the low side ac port. With the engine running and ac on, add Freon until the gauge reads full.
With love and care u can fix it <3
