Easy use a quick disconnect tool or a small screwdriver
You have to use a 3/8" or 10mm quick disconnect tool. It slides in and expands a spring clip in inside so you can pull it apart.
Use a 3/8 inch quick disconnect fitting removal tool. Should be about 5 dollars from an auto parts store.

disconnect clutch, disconnect drive shaft, remove trans brace, and slide transmission back and out of the flywheel being careful not to tilt it until it is free. you may need to remove the shifter to get enough room to slide it back.
Disconnect the battery. On the drivers side of transmission bell housing you will see the starter. remove the power and control wires from the starter. Remove the 2 bolts that hold it to the transmission.
You can disconnect the 1996 Jeep transmission lines with a 9/16 open end wrench. Be prepared for transmission fluid to come out of the transmission lines.
Those transmissions have whats called a "Quick Connect" fitting. There are little plastic tabs on the fittings that must be pushed in so that the line can be pulled out.

Remove transmission oil pan
no. Remove the fan shroud; rem ove the fan; disconnect upper and lower hoses; this is the hard part- disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines. You may have to remove the battery as well - it should be disconnected anyway to keep from setting off the airbags.
You have to remove the transmission oil pan to access the filter.
You have to remove the pan if there is no drain plug
