step 1: lift the vehicle, and use jack stands for safety.
2: remove tire(s)
3:remove the brake caliper and rotor( the solara has a "floating rotor" so once the caliper comes off, the rotor will fall off as well
4:now you will see the strut. on the bottom of the strut there will be two 19mm or 21mm bolts. this attaches the knuckle to the strut. remove these two bolts.
5:there is a nut (forgot the size) in the center of the hub that screws onto the end of the axle. it is usually gold, but can be silver. to remove this nut, there will either be a cotter pin, or more likely, a part that is bent in to keep it from loosening up. you will need to bend this out before you unscrew it
6: now you can push the axle IN, while pulling the knuckle DOWN and OUT to get the end of the axle out of the knuckle.
7:once that is done, the easiest way is to use a slide hammer to remove the axle. it has a small lock ring inside the transmission. rent a slide hammer from an auto parts storeand attach it to the end of the axle. it should only take 1 or 2 hits to pop out the axle.
to install the new axle, same steps as above, except 2 parts. USE CAUTION installing the new axle so that the axle seal (which is still in the transmission) isn't damaged, or you'll have a leak. to get the axle to lock back into the transmission, the easiest way is to use a dead-blow hammer (usuall plastic, 3+ lbs and filled with sand, BBs, etc) 1 good hit will pop it back in, reinstall, make sure the axle nut is locked back onto the axle (a screwdriver and hammer will work to push the metal back into the groove)
it is almost impossible without the right tools as they are fixed into the rear axel so take it into the local Toyota dealership
how do you remove the axel after taking out an alternator
There are two types. If there are two scxrew holes in the face of the drum, run the appropriate sized screw into them and force the drum away from the axel. The newer ones require you to remove the nut and axel bearing, then it comes off easily.
take off the wheel. unbolt the 2 lower strunt bolts, to swing the brake assembly out, pull that end of the axel out, then give the axel a good pull out and it should pop out of the transmission.
pull the caliper bolts and the pull the cotter pin off the axel nut and then pull the axel out. Take the chain off the sprocket and then pull the tire straight out
Most places like brake masters, Midas etc. will do one axel, front or rear for about $100.
depends on type but generally you remove cover ,remove pin locking bolt 5/16" or 8mm ,remove spider pin then push axel inward ,remove "c" clip from axel then pull axel out this allows you to remove gear ball caps and remove gear ball, then pinon comes out through back
u buy a new one
John Albert Axel Gibson died on 2000-07-01.
Remove the passenger front wheel. You will have to take off 3 bolts that hold the passenger axle to the sub frame, slide the axel out. Remove the two bolts that mount the alternator and get the belt loose. Now wrestle with that sucker until you can fit it between the axel and the exhaust, its a real pain.
