If the fan will not turn on -- first check the circuit breaker.
Sometimes the starting capacitor goes bad which will prevent a good motor from starting. In that case you need a competent electrical service man to replace the bad capacitor. Sometimes the switch to which a chain is connected goes bad, in which case you also need a competent electrical technician/serviceman to replace the switch. If the switch and the capacitor are good, than it is probably a bad motor, in which case you buy a new fan.
