There are several ways to soften a leather harness for a dog. One way to do so is applying rubbing alcohol to the leather followed by applying petroleum jelly. Another way to soften the leather harness is with coconut oil by heating the oil slightly and then applying to the leather.

It depends what material the dog collar is made of. You can soften leather dog collars with leather creme. It would be easier just to buy a soft dog collar in the first place though. Fleece dog collars are naturally very soft and non irritant to a dog's skin. Spiffy Dog Air Dog collars are soft, as light as air and waterproof. EzyDog neoprene dog collars are soft, waterprood,rust-proof and have reflective tape trimming.

Is getting a harness for your dog worth it?

Not if your dog walks well on a loose lead without pulling. However if your dog pulls at all whilst on a collar and lead, damage can be caused to a dog's trachea. A dog harness prevents this, as the harness sits on the dog's shoulders, not around the delicate neck region. Anti-pull harnesses are a good training tool to use in conjunction with a training plan to stop your dog pulling. Not all dog harnesses are made equal and it is best to look for a soft dog harness that will not rub or chafe. A good fit is essential to prevent this.
