When you're dealing with a supervisor, you must take that into consideration when confronting the person. You could really affect your relationship with your boss by telling him he's wrong. First, is it really necessary for the boss to know he's wrong? If it's something minor like who won the World Series in 1979 or which celebrity wore a red dress to the Oscars last year, I'd leave it alone and let someone else correct him. If it's vital to your business, however, you'll have to find a way to tactfully correct him.
The first step is to meet with him alone. You certainly don't want anyone else seeing the boss corrected or having him be embarrassed in public. Ask if he has a few minutes or if he can see you after work or something. Then, once you're alone, tell him something along the lines of "I'm sorry and I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds, but I noticed that you set the Kerflubix Machine to 7 and we've been told never to set it above 5." Give the boss a chance to defend his position, just in case he's not actually wrong but just seeing things from a different angle. Once you state your opinion, thank him for taking the time to talk with you. You might also add at some point that of course this conversation is totally private and will never be repeated outside of his office.
Just bear in mind that the boss might never acknowledge his mistake or even correct himself. If you absolutely must tell him, you're going to have to do that and then drop it.
