To check fuel pressure you need to have or the use of a fuel pressure gauge.

On both the TBI and Vortex engines there is a test port generally located

behind or near the fuel pressure regular inlet . There is a hard line in which the

port is mounted, most often the port has a cap on it ( similar to the valve stem

caps on your tires or the caps on your A/C lines ).

1997 5.7 engine fuel pressure should be 55-60 psi at start up, running psi

should not drop below 50 psi. Generally if the psi readings are below 50 psi

it is an indication of a dirty fuel filter, weak fuel pump. If the psi is good at start up but drops off a lot at engine idle then check the fuel pressure regulator.

In answer to the question --- once the engine is turned off the fuel pressure

should not bleed off -- if it does , replace the fuel pressure regulator.

Where is the fuel pressure regulator located on a 96 Chevy Tahoe?

I think the fuel pump is the regulator on fuel injected engines. The FPR is located on the driver's side of the engine, it has a vacuum hose going to it and is held on with a spring clamp similar to AC connector clamp. On most 1996 Chevy Tahoes the fuel pressure regulator is actually inside the intake manifold. You must remove the intake manifold to replace it.
