My old Scirocco had a button on a black square box inside the engine compartment connected to the speedometer cable and you could push the button, which looks more like a clear plastic plug. I think the initial condition was 60K miles, then every 30,000 thereafter, just as a reminder to have routine maintenance.
My quess is the computer (2002 Jetta, mixed emotions) is involved, requiring someone with a magic wand, or another computer, to reset the light which really indicates something in the car needs looking at.

It means that you have a diesel engine, so in cold conditions it is best to turn on the ignition and wait for the yellow coil light to go out before you attempt to start the engine
