Simply save the picture in My Pictures as a PNG or JPG when you save your finished image. You can do this by typing in your image title when the save screen comes up and adding '.png' or '.jpg' to the end. Then go to facebook.com and upload the picture as you would normally. You can do that by clicking 'Photos' on the left side of the screen under your profile picture and then clicking 'upload photos'.
PREVIOUS ANSWER:
Save them as jpg (or jpeg) to whatever directory (file folder) you use for photos.
The computer can NOT tell them apart from any other photo.
This method only sort-of works, however, it's not a true method of putting a gif on Facebook, so I'm putting a bulls*** warning on here.
Edit in GIMP, then save it as JPEG or PNG. Then upload it to Facebook. :)

The only way currently is to link to your Facebook profile, which will load in the profile picture you already have on Facebook.
