It shoots nitrous oxide into the air intake and increases horsepower by alot ANSWER: Nitrous oxide is an oxidizer. In short it adds a huge boost of oxygen to the combustion process, making the fuel burn faster, more energetically, and more completely. This adds horsepower but you run the risk of adding too much which often ends up in parts strewn about on the pavement. There are other methods. In Diesel engines, injecting water or a mixture of water/methanol is very popular. This reduces the temperature inside the motor and allows more fuel to be injected (diesels are limited in power only by combustion temperatures...the more fuel you put in, the more power...as long as you can control the combustion temperature). This method also works in gasoline motors, water injection was very popular in WWII for fighters to control detonation at high altitudes.
