Test the coolant to see what the freezing point is. If the coolant will not protect enough for the low temps of your area, drain the radiator, heater core and block and leave it empty. Remove the battery and store the battery in a building that doesn't go below freezing and/or connect a battery tender to the battery for the Winter.

A battery is used to start a car. Once it is running, the alternator then supplies electrical energy to charge the battery as well as power the electrical systems in the car. Removing the battery while the car is running will not affect the running of the car.
